William J. Bosanko Named New Director of Information Security Oversight Office
Press Release · Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Washington, DC…Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein has announced the appointment of William Jamieson Bosanko (“Jay”) as the new director of the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO). The President of the United States approved Mr. Bosanko’s appointment, which became effective on Monday, April 14, 2008. He succeeds J. William Leonard, who retired in January, 2008.

In making the appointment, Professor Weinstein said, “Mr. Bosanko is a known, strong proponent of the need to strike the critical balance between a fully informed American public and the protection of information that could place our nation at risk. Having worked in nearly every capacity at ISOO and under each of the last two ISOO Directors, he is uniquely qualified to lead ISOO. His significant experience and demonstrated expertise with the entire lifecycle of classified information will benefit the classification system and the interests of all of its numerous stakeholders in government, industry, and the public.”

Mr. Bosanko has been Acting Director of ISOO since January 3, 2008. He has more than 15 years of experience working on issues related to the classification, safeguarding, and declassification of national security information. He most recently served as Associate Director for Classification Management and led ISOO's staff support of the Interagency Security Classification Appeals Panel and the Public Interest Declassification Board.

Mr. Bosanko joined ISOO in 1998. Prior to joining ISOO, he worked for the National Archives on the Special Access and FOIA Staff and the Records Declassification Division. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.
