Special Programs Highlight National Archives Records in June

Washington, DC…In June, the National Archives will feature programs highlighting records from its holdings. All programs are free and open to the public. The programs will be held in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Please note that three of the programs will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, Maryland.

Visitors to all programs in the National Archives Building Research Center (Room G-24) should use the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. The National Archives at College Park, MD is located at 8601 Adelphi Road. See directions to both locations.

Tuesday, June 2, at 11 a.m., Room G-24, Research Center
History of the National Archives and Records Administration
From the War Department Fire in 1800 to the establishment of the National Archives in 1934, archivist Constance Potter looks at why some records did not survive and how other just made it to the National Archives. Her focus is on records of genealogical interest. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in the auditorium, on Thursday, June 4, at 11 a.m.)

Wednesday, June 3, at 11 a.m., Room G-24, Research Center
Introduction to Genealogy
Archives staff will present a lecture on basic genealogical research in Federal records. This lecture occurs on the first Wednesday of the month. The next lecture will take place on Wednesday, July 1.

Navigating the Archival Research Catalog (ARC)
Jill Reilly James with the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) team will show researchers search tips and provide an overview of ARC features. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, June 11, at 11 a.m.)

Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m., Room G-24, Research Center
Introduction to Genealogy
Archives staff will present a lecture on basic genealogical research in Federal records. The next Saturday presentation will take place on September 19.

“Help! I'm Stuck”
Not sure where to begin your research? Is there a genealogical or historical problem that has stumped you? Would you like to explore new directions in your research? An archivist will be available from noon to 4 p.m. to answer questions. Look for the sign at the Research Center desk reading, “Help! I'm Stuck.” The next opportunity will be on September 19.

Tuesday, June 23, at 11 a.m., Room G-24, Research Center
World War II Lost Jewish Assets
Miriam Kleiman, National Archives public affairs specialist, will speak about her research at the National Archives looking into the issue of lost Jewish assets in Swiss banks during World War II. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, June 25, at 11 a.m.)
