More Information
Washington, DC…The National Archives has received the 2009 Society of American Archivists (SAA) CFW Coker award for a World War II: Guide to Records Relating to U.S. Military Participation. This two-volume finding aid, published by the National Archives in 2008, describes 200,000 feet of archival materials regarding U.S. military participation in World War II. The guide was compiled by Timothy Mulligan and edited by Rebecca L. Collier, Judith Koucky and Patrick R. Osborn, all of the National Archives.
The C.F.W. Coker Award recognizes finding aids, finding aid systems, innovative development in archival description, or descriptive tools that enable archivists to produce more effective finding aids. The award was presented at the SAA annual meeting in Austin, on August 14, 2009. “This guide has the potential to make a tremendous impact on national and international scholarly research and will serve as a seminal reference tool for archivists and librarians in describing records and assisting researchers for years to come,” the selection committee noted.
Established in 1984, the award honors the memory of SAA Fellow C.F.W. Coker. Previous recipients include: The Archivists Toolkit™; Greg Bradsher of the National Archives; The Walt Whitman Archive; and the Online Archive of California.
Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America’s oldest and largest national archival professional association. SAA’s mission is to serve the educational and informational needs of more than 5,500 individual and institutional members and to provide leadership to ensure the identification, preservation, and use of records of historical value.
