National Archives Marks Earth Day with Screening of Historic Guggenheim Film April 15

Washington, DC…On Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m., in commemoration of Earth Day, the Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film at the National Archives presents a screening of Charles Guggenheim’s 1979 documentary, H.R. 6161: An Act of Congress. This event is free and open to the public, and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building

Narrated by actor E. G. Marshall, the 58-minute film documents how a law is enacted by the United States Congress—in this instance, HR 6161, a bill to amend the Clean Air Act. The film follows the journey of one piece of legislation from conception through committee amendment and final passage.

The screening will be introduced by Congressman Edward J. Markey (MA – 7th District), who, in 1977 was a co-sponsor of H.R. 6161, and is seen in the film in some of the strategy meetings with bill sponsor Paul Rogers and other supporters. Rep. Markey has long been active on energy and environmental issues since his arrival in Congress, reflecting his commitment to maintaining the quality of life and economic opportunity in New England and across America.
