Lincoln and Haiti: Colonization and Haitian Recognition during the Civil War

Washington, DC…On Thursday, December 2, at 7 p.m., the National Archives will host a panel discussion on President Abraham Lincoln and Haiti. Learn what influenced Lincoln’s decision to extend U.S. diplomatic recognition to Haiti in 1862, and learn the fate of over 400 former slaves sent by Lincoln to colonize an island off Haiti’s coast. This event is free and open to the public, and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.

Moderated by Jeffrey R. Kerr-Ritchie of Howard University, panelists include Franklin Knight, John Hopkins University; James D. Lockett, Stillman College; Phillip Magness, American University; and Debra Newman Ham, Morgan State University. This program is presented in partnership with the National Archives Office of Regional Records Services and the Johns Hopkins Center for Africana Studies.

This event is part of a series of free public programs inspired by Discovering the Civil War Part Two: Consequences- a groundbreaking exhibit that peels back 150 years of accumulated analysis, interpretation, and opinion to take a fresh look at the Civil War through little-known stories, seldom-seen documents, and unusual perspectives. This exhibit is free and open to the public, and will be on display in the Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building through April 17, 2011.

The National Archives Building in Washington, DC, is located on the National Mall and is fully accessible. Please use the Special Events entrance on Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW. National Archives Exhibit Hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (through March 14), and 10 a.m.–7 p.m. daily (through Labor Day).
