National Archives To Break Ground For New Denver-Area Facility September 27, 2011

Washington, DC…The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will break ground for its new Denver-area facility, located at 17101 Huron Street, Broomfield, CO, on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. The groundbreaking ceremony will include remarks by NARA officials and General Services Administration (GSA) and local political leaders. The ceremony is open to the press.

The new facility will house NARA’s Denver-area Research Services and Agency Services components including a Federal Records Center and public research rooms and program event space. The 162,000 square foot building will have a storage capacity of 750,000 cubic feet of Federal records. The facility will employ approximately 40 Federal and contract staff members to serve the research needs of citizens and the records management needs of Federal agencies, and to process a projected 28,000 reference requests per year.

The property is being developed for NARA by the GSA in conjunction with Oxford Development Company. The building is scheduled for initial occupancy in May of 2012.

"The National Archives is delighted to be moving forward with our GSA and Oxford Development Company partners in constructing a state-of-the-art facility for our original records that will meet Federal and environmental standards for protecting and preserving our holdings,” said Barbara Voss, NARA Regional Liaison. “The new facility will also be more user-friendly and will allow greater accessibility to National Archives programs and services, such as free educational workshops."

The Broomfield facility will serve as the Denver-area home of the National Archives and store records from more than 100 Federal agencies and courts located in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Significant holdings will include records from Department of Interior agencies: the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation (the Hoover Dam), and the National Park Service. The facility will also include holdings from the Air Force Academy, the U.S. Mint, the U.S. Forest Service, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The Broomfield facility will provide programs for students, teachers,and the general public. Public access computers will be available for research use, allowing free access to digitized records otherwise only available on subscription-based web sites.

The Press is Invited to Cover the Ceremony. The ceremony begins promptly at 10:00 A.M. Directions: From Denver, take Interstate 25 north to Route 7/E Baseline Road (exit 229). Take Route 7 (E Baseline Road) west. Cross Huron Street on your left. Turn right on County Road 7. Drive for two-tenths of a mile, look for a construction sign on the right at an access road, and turn right onto the access road. The construction site will be on your right.
