National Archives Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. in August 2011

With Special Document Display and Screenings of “The March”

Washington, DC…To commemorate the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr., and in conjunction with the dedication of his national memorial, the National Archives will present a month-long display of a printed program from the 1963 “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” and two noontime screenings of the film The March.

The display and film screenings are free and open to the public, and will take place in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, located on the National Mall at Constitution Ave. and 7th Street, NW. Film screening attendees should enter through the Special Events entrance. Museum summer hours are 10 a.m. to 7 pm., daily. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station.

At the March on Washington, which ended at the Lincoln Memorial and was broadcast nationwide, King gave his famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” to hundreds of thousands of people.

Film Screening: The March
Saturday and Sunday, August 27 & 28, at noon, William G. McGowan Theater

To celebrate the opening of the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial, the National Archives presents two screenings of the 1964 film documenting the August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Directed by James Blue for the United States Information Agency. (30 minutes)
