Washington, DC…On Thursday, January 13, at 7 p.m., in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of JFK’s inauguration, The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film at the National Archives, in partnership with the American Film Institute, presents a screening of the 1964 film John F. Kennedy: Years of Lightning, Day of Drums. This event will be held at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, located at 8633 Colesville Road, in Silver Spring, MD. There will be a $5 admission charge for this event.

Produced by the United States Information Agency (USIA), the 85-minute film John F. Kennedy: Years of Lightning, Day of Drums chronicles the 1000 days of the Kennedy Administration, documenting accomplishments in the areas of foreign policy, the space race, and civil rights; and offers intimate and poignant glimpses of Kennedy family life. Narrated by Gregory Peck and produced by George Stevens, Jr., the film was named one of the Ten Best Films of the Year by The National Board of Review. Stevens, the widely honored film and television producer, former head of the USIA Motion Picture Service (1962-67), and founding director of the American Film Institute, will introduce the film.

Please note: The National Archives William G. McGowan Theater in Washington, DC, is temporarily closed to the public for needed improvements to the lighting, projection, and recording systems. The Theater will reopen in late February 2011, in time to host the Seventh Annual Showcase of Academy Award®-nominated Documentaries and Short Subjects (Feb. 23 -27), presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in partnership with The Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film and the Foundation for the National Archives.
