2012 A Preservation Odyssey:  Paths to the Future

Washington, DC…The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) hosts its 26th annual preservation conference, “2012 A Preservation Odyssey:  Paths to the Future,”on Friday, October 19, 2012, 9 a.m. –5:00 p.m. David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, will give opening remarks. David M. Rubenstein, philanthropist and co-founder of The Carlyle Group, will deliver the keynote address.

This event will take place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Attendees should use the Special Events Entrance, located on the National Mall at Constitution Ave. and 7th Street, NW.

“2012 A Preservation Odyssey:  Paths to the Future”will examine how new challenges and opportunities are reshaping preservation strategies. Featured topics include: reformatting, and storage technologies and solutions; conservation of items big and small; and outreach using social media and training.

“This conference provides an opportunity to share preservation opportunities, challenges and strategies, and new technologies,” said Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero. “In preserving the permanent records of our government, we are ensuring access to America’s cultural heritage and documentation of the rights and privileges guaranteed to our citizens.”

NARA speakers include:  Doris Hamburg, Director of Preservation Programs; Amy Lubick, Senior Paper Conservator and Conservation Digitization Coordinator; Sara Shpargel, Senior Photograph Conservator, and Susan Page, Senior Paper Conservator.

Guest speakers include:  Ronald D. Weiss, President, Arkival Technology Corporation; John Faundeen, EROS Center Archivist, U.S. Geological Survey; Brad Lawrence, Computer Science Lead, Kennedy Advanced Visualization Environments, Digital Image Analysis, Kennedy Space Center; Nancy E. Kraft, Head of Preservation and Conservation, University of Iowa Libraries; and Beth Doyle, Head of Conservation Services Department, Duke University Libraries.

Preserving Grain, Presenting Pixels: Film Preservation and Restoration in the Digital Age

The conference will be followed by a special program and panel discussion on film preservation. In 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council released a landmark study, The Digital Dilemma:  Strategic Issues in Archiving and Accessing Digital Motion Picture Materials. Five years later, archival institutions and the film industry continue to face this dilemma when preserving and restoring motion pictures. Josef Linder, Preservation Officer for the Academy Film Archive, and Christina Kovac and Bryce Lowe, Motion Picture Preservation Specialists at the National Archives, will discuss the “digital dilemma” and show examples from recent projects. This program is presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in partnership with the Charles Guggenheim Center for the Documentary Film and the Foundation for the National Archives.
