Archivist of the United States Appoints New Federal Register Director

Washington, DC…Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero has appointed Charley Barth as Director of the Office of the Federal Register. As Director, Barth oversees providing access to the Federal Register and administering both the Electoral College and the constitutional amendment process. He started this position earlier this month.
In making the announcement, the Archivist said, “I am pleased to welcome Charley as Director of the Federal Register. He has the leadership qualities needed to guide the Federal Register—extensive and proven records management knowledge and experience.”
“The Office of the Federal Register is the one-stop location, whether online or in print, to keep abreast of all of the substantive actions of the Executive branch and the Congress. It is an exciting and challenging place to be, and I am honored to head this important office.” said Barth.
Barth has a long and accomplished career of Government service. He started as an intern for Senator Carl Levin (MI). He then worked as an IT contract specialist at the Naval Information Systems Management Center. He next served as Program Manager and Subject Matter Expert in Information Management for the Department of the Navy’s Chief Information Officer. He became the Department of Homeland Security’s first Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act officer. Most recently, he was Director of Records for the Secretary of the Navy. Barth has been featured in publications including Federal Computer Week, Government Computer News and Government Executive.

- Chair of the National Archives Advisory Committee on Electronic Records Archives.

- Recipient of Archivist’s Achievement award for outstanding achievement in records management.
- Adviser to the U.S. Forces in Iraq on records management and preservation.
Born and raised in Michigan, Barth attended Ball State University on a full football scholarship. He received his BS degree in Political Science with a minor in Military Science. He earned a Master of Management degree in Procurement and Acquisitions Management from Webster University. He and his wife Julie reside in Stafford, VA, and have two sons.
