New National Archives at St. Louis Kicks off Speaker Program October 20, 2011

The Struggle for Equality: Female Activism and the Evolution of Women in the Military

On Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., the National Archives at St. Louis features a panel discussion on “The Struggle for Equality: Female Activism and the Evolution of Women in the Military.” This event will be held at the new National Archives facility located at 1 Archives Dr., St. Louis, MO (next to Hazelwood East Middle School off Dunn Road). A 6 p.m. reception will precede the program.

This program, which is free and open to the public, is held in conjunction with Documented Rights, an exhibition that uses facsimiles of milestone documents drawn from National Archives holdings nationwide to illustrate this nation’s continuing process of defining human and civil rights. In St. Louis, the exhibition includes Holding the Line, a special section based on documents from the National Archives at St. Louis. Documented Rights runs through March 2, 2012, at the National Archives at St. Louis’ new facility. View the online exhibit [www.archives.gov/exhibits/documented-rights]. Exhibit hours are Monday – Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Moderated by Dr. Betty Porter-Walls, the panel will include:

Dr. Betty Porter-Walls, assistant professor in the College of Education at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, MO. A career educator, she specializes in the areas of literacy/reading, leadership development, diversity, curriculum and instruction, and early childhood education.

Dr. Bob Moore, historian for the National Park Service (NPS) at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, MO, and author of The Gateway Arch: An Architectural Dream(2005).

Dr. Tanya Roth, historian, whose dissertation, Battling for Equality, examines the integration of women into the U.S. military between 1945 and 1978. She teaches at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School.

Tech Sergeant Margarita Lugo, Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Equal Opportunity Office at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, who advises base personnel on discrimination and harassment issues.

Laura X (Laura Rand Orthwein, Jr.), St. Louis native, founder and director of the National Clearinghouse on Marital Rape. She founded the Women's History Research Center in 1968, and successfully led the campaign to make marital rape illegal in California in 1979.
