National Archives Holds Programs Related to Genealogy in November 2011

Washington, DC…In November, the National Archives will feature genealogy-related programs highlighting records from its holdings, with topics ranging from Civil War contraband camp registers to military headstones. These programs are free and open to the public, and will be held in the National Archives Building Research Center (Room G-24) in Washington, DC. Visitors should use the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. Please note that two of the programs will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, Maryland, located at 8601 Adelphi Road. See directions to both locations.

Civil War Contraband Camp Registers: A Roadmap to the Past and Future
The 1863 Register of Freedmen from Camp Shiloh in Memphis, TN, identifies over 3,000 recently freed African Americans. Alisea Williams-McLeod will describe this register and discuss how these and other records are being transcribed for genealogy research. (The lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, in Lecture Room D, Thursday, November 17, at 11 a.m.)

Not sure where to begin? Has a genealogical problem stumped you? An archivist is available from noon to 4 p.m. to answer genealogy research questions. Sign up for a 20-minute appointment at the Microfilm Research desk in room G-26 on Saturday.
