BACKGROUND:

When President Barack Obama leaves office on Friday, January 20, 2017, his official records and gifts received on behalf of the U.S. government become the property of the National Archives and Records Administration. This collection is being transferred to a temporary facility in the greater Chicago area. The materials will eventually be housed within the future Barack Obama Presidential Library in Chicago. Due to security concerns and for the protection of the holdings, the National Archives cannot discuss certain specifics related to the move.

For background on what has happened since the National Archives began taking possession of Presidential records in 1945, see the article in the latest issue of Prologue: Quarterly of the National Archives and Records Administration, "Escorting a Presidency into History" at http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2008/winter/transitions.html
