National Archives Responds to Senate Questions About White House Recordkeeping
Press Release · Thursday, March 30, 2017

Washington, DC

On March 30, 2017, Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero responded to the March 7, 2017, letter from Senators Claire McCaskill and Tom Carper, asking about White House compliance with the Presidential Records Act (PRA).  The Senators had raised questions about smartphone apps, and asked if the President’s tweets—including deleted tweets—are being preserved in accordance with the PRA.

The Archivist responded to the questions and noted that “attorneys with the Office of the Counsel to the President have consulted with NARA officials on a regular basis regarding compliance with the PRA.” He also shared extensive guidance that NARA has provided on Presidential and Federal records.
