Federal Records Management

Donations

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the official repository of the Federal Government of the United States and is committed to preserving the records of the government. As such, NARA accepts the donation of non-federal records or records of mixed ownership corporations when those records fill a gap in NARA’s existing holdings, are closely related to federal records already in the custody of the National Archives, or otherwise document the national experience in a way not adequately captured in federal records.

NARA understands that some items may contain significant personal value. However, as an archives, NARA is a repository of records, rather than manuscripts or artifacts. Non-historically significant items, such as newspaper clippings, personal diaries, military awards or decorations, uniforms or related accessories, or ephemera and memorabilia may be better suited for other cultural institutions, such as museums and libraries which are more likely to collect in those areas. We appreciate the efforts of private citizens to preserve culturally relevant pieces of American history, and hope you find the institution that best fits your materials!

Each proposed donation is reviewed case-by-case, regardless of prior appraisal decisions.

When deciding whether a collection is appropriate for accessioning into the National Archives, NARA staff will consider the following:

  • The relationship between the proposed donation and NARA’s current holdings, including whether the records could fill gaps or supplement existing NARA collections.
  • Whether the records include essential evidence documenting the rights of American citizens, the actions of federal officials, or the national experience in a way not otherwise captured in permanent federal records.
  • Whether the records document events that attracted great public, Congressional, or judicial attention.
  • Past decisions regarding similar records.

More information about the National Archives’ appraisal policies can be found on our websiteIf the materials proposed for donation do not fall within the purview of the National Archives, NARA may suggest alternative institutions that might be interested in the material.

If you have questions about how best to preserve historical documents in your personal collection, documents, resources and advice are available on our website and on the Library of Congress' websites on personal archiving projects and caring for collections.
