Memorandum to Federal Agency Records Officers:  Agency Records Officer Credential (AROC) Renewal

NARA Bulletin 2019-02: Agency Records Officer Credential Training and Renewal Policy requires designated Agency Records Officers (AROs) to renew their AROC credential every three years. The purpose of this renewal is to ensure that designated AROs are current in their knowledge of federal records management policies and procedures.

AROC renewal will begin January 3, 2023. For those eligible for renewal, NARA’s Records Management Training team will begin sending email notifications in early December 2022.

AROs needing to renew their credential will take an assessment in three subject areas. A score of 80 percent or greater in each section is required to pass. If the assessment is not passed, AROs will need to complete online training before retaking the assessment. The renewal requirement is not expected to take more than two hours.

AROs have six months from the notification date to successfully complete the AROC renewal requirement.

More information about renewal requirements can be found in Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about NARA’s Agency Records Officer Credential Training and Renewal Policy (NARA Bulletin 2019-02).

Please send any questions or concerns to RMT1@nara.gov.
