Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Enrollee Records
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided employment and vocational training for unemployed youths and other demographic groups in conservation and natural resources development work and, beginning in May 1940, defense work on military reservations and forest protection. The personnel files of those federally employed on CCC projects are part of the holdings of the National Archives at St. Louis and a selection has been digitized.
Instructions to Search Digitized CCC Enrollee Files on the NARA Catalog
Follow the steps below to search the Enrollee Files on the NARA Catalog. The files are organized by reel number, then alphabetically by the Enrollee’s surname.
1. Use the Enrollee’s surname to locate the reel number from the PDF finding aids below. The reel number is listed in the leftmost column.
2. Navigate to the Enrollee Files on the Catalog. Use the Reel Number to "Search within this Series" in the search bar under the series title, “Individual Records (Enrollees).” Enter ["Reel [X]"] as your search term, where X is the reel number identified on the finding aids above. e.g. [“Reel 4148”]—quotation marks to be included in search terms
3. Open the File Unit returned as your search result by clicking on the blue lettering of the "Enrollee Files.”
4. The link will open the entire digitized microfilm reel of the alpha range desired. In order to locate a specific individual you will need to scroll through the images. Do so in the righthand, numbered column under the “+Show Details” indicator. . The files are organized alphabetically. An enrollee may have multiple files so be sure to check the files around the individual identified to ensure you have the complete record.
5. To download the images associated with the file located: Select each page of the record. It will have a blue border around the image when selected. Then click the ‘Download’ icon in the bottom left of the image viewer. Each page of the record can be downloaded this way.
Record located: Medical and clinical records of the CCC enrollees were created and stored separately from the Enrollee Files. Enrollees may have additional records related to any treatment received on this separate, undigitized, series.
To request a search of these records please email stl.archives@nara.gov. If an additional record is located within these series, an invoice will be issued for the associated digitization fee.
Record not located: If an Enrollee File was not located on the Catalog, they may have a record with another agency connected to the work of the CCC.
