Fall 2025 interns have the opportunity to work in a variety of fields, including archival processing, museum exhibits, and more. Interns work between 10-40 hours per week for 12 weeks. Internships are unpaid, yet can be done for academic credit or volunteer hours. Learn more about the program here.

George W. Bush - Dallas, TX - Archival Digitization Internship
3 internships available at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas, TX
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Interns’ primary task is to prepare documents for digitization. Details are as follows:
- Remove fasteners (staples, clips, etc.) and bindings
- Remove non-scannable items & materials (envelopes, boxes, bags, etc.)
- Identify and alert LP-GWB (Bush Presidential Library) staff of any non-scannable/textual items or materials (AV, electronic textual, artifact)
- Create preservation copies where needed

Professional Development Opportunities:
- Museum collections work is ongoing care and documentation of the artifacts. This internship will give the intern an understanding of what collections work entails.
- Groupings of artifacts will be assigned with specific tasks to be completed related to inventory, cataloging, processing, or photographing.
Work Environment:
- The intern will work with the museum collections staff in artifact processing and artifact storage.
- Artifact storage spaces are climate controlled and generally cool to cold.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Assist Registrar with inventorying museum collections
- Create condition reporting and assess object storage conditions
- Write object descriptions and update database records
- Assist Registrar with photographing objects
- Create archival storage supports and/or enclosures for objects
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Interns will gain hands-on experience with museum collection management best practices.
- They will get a behind the scenes look at the policies and procedures for managing museum objects within the National Archives Presidential Library system while contributing to the preservation of our national history.
- Products created during the internship - such as updated object descriptions and photographs - will be utilized by the public and National Archives staff to increase access to our holdings.

Archival Internship at the National Archives in Chicago

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Interns will arrange and describe records, digitize records, and perform basic preservation tasks on records.
- The intern will also have some opportunities to help with reference as well.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- In addition to obtaining hands on experience processing and digitizing 19th and 20th Century records, the intern will be able to observe how a small staff is able to manage over 130,000 cubic feet of records and answer thousands of reference requests in a timely manner.
- The intern will also be able to participate in all staff meetings and staff development programs that take place during their tour.
Work Environment:
- Most of the work will be sedentary nature, although the intern may need to assist with moving multiple 50 pound boxes related to assigned projects.
- The room where records are worked on is clean, but many of the records may be dirty.

Archival Internship at the National Archives in Denver

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Carry out preservation actions needed to preserve NARA's holdings and make them available for use.
- Apply the principles of archival arrangement and description to increase discoverability and access.
- Assist in internal digitization activities by conducting document preparation activities and digitizing records according to NARA policies, procedures and standards.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- Interns will learn about archival preservation practices, describing complex records for discoverability and digitization utilizing several different imaging solutions, including a high-speed scanner and a camera set-up.
- They will be encouraged to identify individual records or series of records to apply principles of enhanced description to as well as learning how to promote those records, and their work through NARA’s social media platforms.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Interns will assist with archival processing of records (including arrangement and description, rehousing and labeling, creating finding aids, etc.) and digitization of records (including imaging of records, creation of metadata, quality control, etc.).
- Interns will have opportunities to perform historical research, create social media or blog posts, and assist with the reference process may be available pending project selection.

- Intern will assist the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) with data gathering and coordination with external Federal OIG for the peer review of the NARA OIG.

Content Development Internship for the Education Division

Tasks & Responsibilities:
- The primary goal of the Education Division at the National Archives is to design and implement educational programs and resources that engage diverse audiences with primary source materials, promote historical thinking skills, and support the teaching of civics, history, and government.
- As an intern in the education division, you will contribute to this mission by developing educational activities and resources that use primary sources to deepen historical understanding, facilitating discovery carts and hands-on educational activities in the museum to engage visitors of all ages with original documents from the Archives’ holdings, and supporting in-person student programs to enhance critical thinking skills.

- Develop finding aids for the catalog, which will assist users in navigating the holdings more efficiently and enhance overall accessibility to the records. This role provides valuable experience in archival practices and makes a significant contribution to the management of historical documents.
Professional Development Opportunities:
- During the internship, participants will acquire the skills necessary to evaluate the processing requirements of textual records, understand the methodologies employed to establish both physical and intellectual control over the records, as well as learn how to strategize and document processing procedures.
