Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Volunteers

The National Archives at Chicago maintains an active volunteer program. Our volunteers currently participate in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Basic preservation work on historical documents
  • Arrangement, description, and digitization projects
  • Assisting researchers in the Microfilm Research Room
  • Working with staff on special and long-term projects

Volunteers enjoy a flexibility of work hours and projects. The National Archives at Chicago requires volunteers to contribute a minimum of 72 hours during the year to retain their volunteer status.

Volunteers enjoy various benefits, including complimentary access to National Archives fee-based programs and discounts on National Archives books and merchandise.

Volunteers must have availability during our normal business hours, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. -  4:15 p.m.

Please note that, while both are part of the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Archives at Chicago is a separate facility from the Obama Presidential Library. If you are interested in possible volunteer opportunities with the Obama Library, please contact obama.library@nara.gov.

Internships

Our Chicago office offers college-level students and other individuals the opportunity to participate in non-paid internships at the facility. If accepted, students are required to work 160 hours within a specific time frame to successfully complete an internship.

Interns at the National Archives at Chicago work in a variety of program areas including:

  • basic preservation
  • reference and research services
  • digitization
  • arrangement and description of historical records
