National Archives Celebrates Maritime Month in May
Special speakers, events, and films to highlight key moments in U.S. maritime history
Washington, DC…The National Archives will celebrate Maritime Month in May, 2006. Using Federal records, the National Archives will highlight the rich maritime history of the United States through special events, presentations, exhibits, and films at various National Archives facilities across the nation. Program locations, topics and highlights:
Washington, DC and College Park, MD: Civil War records; United States Navy and Coast Guard logs, muster rolls, and photographic records; maritime records in the diplomatic archives; American seamen impressment cases; merchant vessel searches; the Battle of Midway; overseas activities in World War II; the Panama Canal; and the Mississippi River.
Northeast Region (Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Pittsfield, MA): Custom House records; records relating to sailors and seamen; teaching with maritime records; lighthouses and early maritime records; early navy records; and month-long exhibits highlighting the Titanic and Lusitania Limitation of Liability Case Files.
Mid-Atlantic Region (Philadelphia, PA): The Constitution at Sea Level; Stevedores in 1950's Philadelphia (including a screening of On the Waterfront); the Special Board of Inquiry; passenger lists; and the opening of an exhibit on the construction and travels of the U.S.S. Olympia, now berthed in Philadelphia.
Southeast Region (Atlanta, GA): Maritime-related films.
Central Plains Region (Kansas City, MO): Civil War records, Maritime records in the Diplomatic archives, US Navy photographic records, and American Seamen Impressment Cases.
National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) (St. Louis, MO): The Sea Services: Documents from the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines exhibit at the Jefferson Barracks Historic Park in St. Louis, MO.
Pacific Region (San Francisco, CA): The 100 Year Remembrance of the Point Alones Village exhibit at the Maritime Museum of Monterey, CA.
Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA): Workshops relating to Pacific Northwest maritime and Customs records, and naturalization and immigration records, and a month-long exhibit focusing on regional maritime records.
