National Archives is Recipient of Internet2 IDEA Award
Press Release · Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Washington, DC…On April 26, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was awarded the Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award for its Transcontinental Persistent Archives Prototype. The prototype was developed in partnership with the University of Maryland and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) as a research test bed as part of NARA’s research initiatives for its Electronic Records Archives (ERA) program.

The Transcontinental Persistent Archives Prototype is a distributed federation of different, and independently administered, computing platforms that interact as a single virtual repository and address the challenges inherent in preserving, protecting, and providing access to the Nation’s electronic records due to the diversity, complexity, and enormous volume of the electronic records being created today. The prototype system is distributed between NARA, the University of Maryland, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center utilizing an innovative Internet-2 data grid and is based on the SDSC Storage Resource Broker (SRB) technology.

The IDEA awards recognize achievement in applied advanced networking. Winners are selected from a field of distinguished nominations, and are judged based on positive impact to users, technical merit, and the potential for adoption on a broad scale. The first annual awards were given out at the 2006 Spring Member Meeting in Washington, DC.

BACKGROUND:
The National Archives and Records Administration ensures, for the citizen, the President, the Congress, and the Courts, access to records that document the rights of citizens, the actions of Federal officials, and the national experience. NARA plays a key role in fostering effective and responsible government through management of the records in all three branches of the Federal Government and through sustained access to historically valuable records in the National Archives and the Presidential Libraries.

Led by more than 200 U.S. universities working with industry and government, Internet2 develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2 recreates the partnerships among academia, industry, and government that helped foster today's Internet in its infancy.
