Special Programs to Highlight National Archives Records in October

Washington, DC…During October, the National Archives will feature staff presentations providing in-depth information on records from the National Archives’ holdings related to the history of Filipinos in the United States, baseball, the Spanish American War, and will host a new book club discussion.

The programs are free and open to the public, and will be held in the National Archives Building Research Center, Room G-24. Please note: the public must use the National Archives Building’s 700 Pennsylvania Avenue entrance, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC, to access Room G-24. Some lectures will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, MD, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD, facility. The National Archives is fully accessible. A History of Filipinos in the U.S.: Records from the National Archives’ Holdings
Tuesday, October 3, at 11 a.m.

The year 2006 marks the centennial of the first significant immigration of Filipinos to the United States. Rita Cacas will discuss the arrival of the early 20th-century Filipinos, using historic images and records from NARA Record Group 350 (Bureau of Insular Affairs), covering the period 1900–1945, when the Philippine Islands were occupied and controlled by the United States. She will also discuss military records from Record Group 407—World War II military records that are also known as the Philippine Archive Collection. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, October 5, at 11 a.m.)

Beyond the Box Score: Baseball Research in the National Archives
Tuesday, October 17, at 11 a.m.

Archivist John Vernon will discuss primarily nontextual NARA sources for baseball-related research and will show facsimiles of several records. Archivist David Pfeiffer will provide illustrations of significant textual sources for baseball research. This session is a continuation of our previous discussion of research in baseball records in the National Archives. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, October 19, at 11 a.m.)

National Archives "From the Records Book Group"
Wednesday, October 18, at noon

We will discuss The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History, by John M. Barry. This free discussion is open to the public. Please check the Archives Shop (202-357-5271) for book availability and a special discount for book group participants. NOTE: November’s book will be Presidents at War: From Truman to Bush, The Gathering of Military Powers To Our Commanders in Chief by Gerald Astor and John P. Murtha.

Spanish-American War Records in the National Archives
Tuesday, October 24, at 11 a.m.

Trevor Plante will discuss Spanish-American War records with a focus on records relating to service in the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. (This lecture will be repeated at the National Archives at College Park, in Lecture Room B, on Thursday, October 26, at 11 a.m.)
