Archivist Allen Weinstein Honors Central Plains Region Staff
Press Release · Friday, December 2, 2005

Washington, DC…At the National Archives annual State of the Archives Address and Awards Ceremony yesterday, Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein recognized three Central Plains Region staffers -- John Allshouse, Roger Eddy, and RoseMarie Weisz -- for outstanding achievement in customer service to internal National Archives customers. In giving the award, the Archivist noted: "Your professionalism, your commitment to the work at hand, your response to National Archives customers and partners, your sense of mission, have all been exemplary. I thank each and every National Archives employee who has contributed to my understanding of the agency. Our customers recognize, as I do, the high quality of work performed at the National Archives."

Background: For the last five years, the National Archives has stored its holdings of acetate-based and color film with a commercial storage provider. As the contract with this provider was nearing its end, John Allshouse, Roger Eddy, and RoseMarie Weisz prompted Preservation Programs to consider the Lenexa, Kansas Federal Records Center as a provider for these services. The staff submitted a competitive bid for a dedicated facility to store and service these important historical records at a far more economic price than the commercial provider. The staff won the contract and the awardees worked as a team to ensure the success of the project. They made major contributions toward achieving internal customer service goals by learning the requirements for the project, overseeing construction of the bay and innovatively solving any issues that arose, improving the service provided to Preservation Programs, and saving the National Archives millions of dollars in the process.

Over the past year, John Allshouse, Roger Eddy, and RoseMarie Weisz worked to research, design and bring online a state-of-the-art cold storage bay in the Lenexa, Kansas Federal Records Center. The 18,000-square-foot bay (nicknamed "Project Ice Cube") opened in February of 2005 and will house 80,000 cubic feet of acetate-based and color film for the National Archives. It is estimated that this project, which was conceived and brought to fruition by the award recipients, will save the National Archives approximately $12 million over the next 20 years.
