National Archives Presents Free Film Screening and Author Lecture Related to New Exhibit “School House to White House”
Washington, DC…In May, the National Archives will present a film screening and an author lecture and book signing highlighting various aspects of U.S. Presidents’ lives inspired by its new multi-media exhibition “School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents.” The exhibition opened in the Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery of the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. on March 30, 2007 and runs through January 1, 2008. Spring hours through Labor Day) are 10 A.M. – 7 P.M. daily.

McGowan Theater is located in the National Archives Building on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, Washington, DC. Use the National Archives Building Special Events entrance on the corner of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue.
“School House to White House: The Education of the Presidents.” This family-friendly exhibition focuses on the early education of American Presidents from Herbert Hoover through George W. Bush and features documents and artifacts from the National Archives’ Presidential Libraries.

Starring Shirley Temple, one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s favorite actresses, Bright Eyes tells the story of a young girl who is orphaned when her mother is killed in a car accident and who is forced to live with the snooty couple her mother used to work for. A custody battle soon ensues between an aviator who adores the little girl and the couple’s crotchety Uncle Ned. Features the song “Good Ship Lollipop.” (1934, 84 minutes)
Michael Beschloss on Presidential Courage —Thursday,
May 10, at 7 p.m.
William G. McGowan Theater
Michael Beschloss will speak on his latest book, Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789–1989. Presidential Courage describes the inner turmoil faced by U.S. Presidents at moments of crisis and the sources of strength they have drawn upon during such times. It also highlights the wives and other relatives, the friendships, and the private beliefs from which these Presidents took their strength. A book signing will follow the program. Beschloss is the author of eight distinguished books on the American Presidency.
