Definition: The beginning number of the Congress during which the archival materials were created.

 

Purpose: The House and Senate committees archive and transfer their records by Congress and researchers often request records by Congress number. In addition, citations for legislation, hearings, and other committee publications use Congress number. This field allows staff and researchers to conduct more effective searches of Congressional records and to associate committee publications with related archival materials.
