Finding Special Prosecutors and Independent Counsels Documents in the National Archives Catalog

The National Archives Catalog is a database of selected holdings from the National Archives and Records Administration. The National Archives Catalog is a searchable database that contains information about a wide variety of NARA's holdings across the country. You can use the National Archives Catalog to search descriptions for key words or topics, and then to retrieve digital copies of selected textual documents, photographs, maps, and sound recordings.

Currently, the National Archives Catalog contains only a few descriptions or digital copies of records created by offices of Independent Counsels or Special Prosecutors. The National Archives Catalog does contain descriptions of some additional records relating to Independent Counsels.

General information about Independent Counsels

Search Hint:
  • Select Basic or Advanced search.
  • To retrieve the record descriptions relating to independent counsels in general, enter "special prosecutor" in the Keywords box.
  • Press the Go button.

    The database will return descriptions of records relating to Independent Counsel legislation from the Carter Administration, motion picture recordings relating to Watergate, and a video recording relating to Iran/Contra. Copies of these documents ARE NOT available on-line. To order copies of these documents contact the National Archives office listed in the Location field of each description.

Records relating to Watergate

Search Hint:
  • To retrieve record descriptions and some digital documents relating to Watergate, enter "watergate" in the Keywords box.
  • The database will return descriptions of photographs and moving images relating to Watergate. In addition, the database will return references to digital images of a few items of evidence used in the Watergate break in trial or collected by the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. To order copies of these documents contact the National Archives office listed in the Location field of each description.
