Help transcribe this series, which consists of duplicate copies of reports, exhibits, and exhibit lists relating to the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy, unofficially known as the Warren Commission. The records concern the investigation of the murders of President Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald. It is not known exactly when this series was created. Although it was created no earlier than 1963, it may include copies of documents predating the Commission that were used as evidence during the investigation.

Case Files in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts

1790-1917

Help us transcribe such cases as “Two Friends, One Schooner,” "Habeas Corpus for Three Pirates,” and “Lincoln, Benjamin v. 16 boxes of lemons.” These files include written charges or allegations by the plaintiffs; pleas; answers; and demurrers by defendants; appearances of attorneys; and jury verdicts. Some cases relate to the transport of enslaved persons. Many cases prior to 1866 relate to confiscation and forfeitures for smuggling, illegal entry of goods, non-payment of tariff duties, and other violations of customs and revenue laws including the Non-Intercourse and Embargo Acts of the War of 1812 period, and prizes captured during the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

Index of Navy Purple Heart Award Recipients

1942–1950

Transcribe this series of index cards containing the names, ranks, service numbers, ship attachments, dates and locations of wounds received or deaths, and addresses of next of kin of award recipients. No single, complete list of all Purple Heart recipients exists, making individual records crucial for preserving history.

Freedmen's Bureau Letters Received

April 1866–December 1866

Transcribe letters that were received by the Freedmen's Bureau office in Macon, Georgia. While a major part of the Bureau’s early activities included the supervision of abandoned and confiscated property, its mission was to provide relief and help formerly enslaved people become self-sufficient. Because the Bureau’s records contain a wide range of data about the African American experience during slavery and Reconstruction, they are an invaluable source for historians, social scientists, and genealogists.
