State Boards Program

refer to caption

New Mexico has an active historical records advisory board.

In 1977 NHPRC began making grants to state governments to preserve and promote access to local historical records. The agency required participating states to establish a State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) to plan and steer all NHPRC-funded programming. Since its creation, the State Boards program has issued awards to all 50 states, 3 territories, and the District of Columbia.

Today, this is the only federal funding opportunity dedicated specifically to the states for archival investments. Approximately 30 states and territories currently enjoy an active SHRAB, and these Boards direct NHPRC funds toward a variety of activities, such as:

  • funding archival projects and supplies
  • coordinating training opportunities for archivists
  • helping local organizations preserve their own records

The State Boards program accepts applications each May for awards that cover the subsequent two calendar years. Updated application instructions are published each December in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
