Comparison of Drying Methods

Refer to CaptionSlide 05 Comparison of Drying Methods Kaplan/Ludwig 2003

Water may make components of paper soluble-- such as dyes, sizings, fillers, surface coatings, and degradation products of aged papers. Mold is always a potential consequence of water damage when the drying process is delayed beyond a two-day period.

The four processes compared in this project were:

  • air-drying
  • dehumidification-drying in-house and off-site
  • vacuum freeze-drying,
  • and a patented vacuum freeze-dry process.
I hope to convey how we carried out this study; observations made; and what we learned along the way.
