Records of Related Agencies of the FBI

Among numerous other record groups that include substantial amounts of FBI documentation, the following Department of Justice organizations are the most significant.

RG 21: Records of District Courts of the United States. The FBI undertakes many investigations relating to matters brought before District Courts. The reports on the results of those investigations are made part of the case file.

RG 60: Records of the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice is the parent agency of the FBI. The results of FBI investigations carried out in support of activities of the Department will be found in its files as will documentation on executive direction of the Bureau.

RG 118: Records of U.S. Attorneys. U.S. Attorneys make decisions on whether or not to present cases to grand juries and to pursue prosecution in Federal Court. Many of those decisions are based on FBI investigations conducted at the request of a U.S. Attorney.

RG 449: Records of Independent Counsels. FBI agents are generally assigned to assist Independent Counsels with their investigations.

RG 460: Records of the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. The FBI was heavily involved in the investigation of the Watergate break-in.
