From the collection at Cornell University, family, professional, political, and diplomatic correspondence of George Bancroft (1800-1891), historian, Secretary of the Navy, and Minister to Great Britain, Prussia, and the German Empire. During his tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845. Among his best-known writings is the magisterial series, History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent. Other large collections of Bancroft papers are in the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Library of Congress, and the New York Public Library.
