Hilary Abner Herbert (1834 –1919) was a lawyer, a soldier, and a statesman. He entered the Confederate service as captain of the Greenville Guards; promoted to the rank of colonel of the Eighth Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He was elected as a Democrat Congress and served from 1877 to 1893.  Was Secretary of the Navy 1893-1897 under President Grover Cleveland. His personal papers discuss the navy, military, and diplomatic problems; internal strife in the political parties; the Reconstruction period; and the problems of former slaves. This collection includes correspondence, writings, speeches, and scrapbooks.
