Reformatting Approaches by Original Record Type
“Original record type” refers to the different categories of permanent archival records (both federal and Presidential) held by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). In the context of this website, original record type usually refers to the media type of physical archival records that will be digitized for preservation and access purposes. Listed below are the different types of original media handled by the Moving Image and Sound Preservation Labs. While the Audio-Video Preservation Lab solely creates digital products, the Motion Picture Preservation Lab currently performs a mix of digital and photochemical reformatting, with each reformatting approach described in a separate table. For more information on how to use these tables, please refer to the Reformatting Approaches page.
