382.1 ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY

Established: In the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), effective December 31, 1965, by the Water Quality Act of 1965 (79 Stat. 903), October 2, 1965.

Predecessor Agencies:

Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control (DWSPC), Public Health Service (PHS), Federal Security Agency (FSA, 1949-53)
DWSPC, PHS, HEW (1953-65)

Transfers: To the Department of the Interior by Reorganization Plan No. 2 of 1966, effective May 10, 1966.

Functions: Administered federal water quality improvement and pollution control programs.

Abolished: By the Water Quality Improvement Act of 1970 (84 Stat. 113), April 3, 1970.

Successor Agencies: Federal Water Quality Administration, Department of the Interior (1970); Environmental Protection Agency (1970- ).

382.2 HEADQUARTERS RECORDS
1937-68

History: DWSPC established in PHS, FSA, to administer the Water Pollution Control Act (62 Stat. 1155), June 30, 1948. Transferred with PHS from abolished FSA to newly created HEW by Reorganization Plan No. 1 of 1953, effective April 11, 1953. Abolished and functions assigned to newly established FWPCA, 1965. SEE 382.1.
