419.1 Administrative History

Established: In the Education Division, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, by an act of June 23, 1972 (86 Stat. 327).

Transfers: To Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), Department of Education, by the Department of Education Organization Act (93 Stat. 678), October 17, 1979.

Functions: Provided leadership in the conduct and support of scientific inquiry into the educational process.

Abolished: By OERI reorganization announced in statement (press release) of Secretary of Education William Bennett, printed in United States Department of Education News, July 2, 1985, and implemented in Memorandum, Linda M. Combs, Deputy Undersecretary for Management, to Chester E. Finn, Jr., Assistant Secretary for Educational Research and Improvement, subject: Approval of Reorganization of OERI, October 2, 1985; all pursuant to authority contained in Sec. 413 (b) (1) of the Department of Education Organization Act (93 Stat. 684), October 17, 1979.

Successor Agencies: Center for Statistics, OERI (National Assessment of Educational Progress and education economic analysis only); Information Service, OERI (Department of Education Library only); Office of Research, OERI (all other NIE functions).
