 431.1 ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY

Established: As an independent agency by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 (88 Stat. 1242), October 11, 1974. Became operational, effective January 19, 1975, by EO 11834, January 15, 1975.

Predecessor Agencies:
  • Atomic Energy Commission (AEC, 1946-74)
Functions: Regulates the civilian uses of nuclear energy by licensing persons and companies to own and use nuclear materials, and to build and operate nuclear reactors. Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with licensing standards.

Textual Records: Case files, arranged by state, relating to the administration of the state's civilian nuclear power facilities in accordance with an agreement concluded between the state and either the NRC or its predecessor, the AEC ("State Agreement Files"), 1957-82. Copies of staff papers distributed to NRC members, containing discussions of legal and policy issues, 1981. Retained copies of internal memorandums concerning issues before the Congress of NRC interest, 1979-80.
