Research Our Records

Motion Picture Research Room (Room 4000) at College Park will be closed June 17-28, 2019

Researcher Notice

From June 17 through June 28, 2019, the Motion Picture Research Room (Room 4000) of the National Archives at College Park will be closed to the public. We anticipate that the room will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, July 1, 2019. This closure is necessary to facilitate the planned removal of the room’s movable shelving units, which are being permanently retired from use. During this period, reference consultation service, as well as records availability from NARA’s motion picture and recorded sound holdings, will be affected.

Digitized motion picture content available on the Special Media Public Access PCs will continue to be available in the Still Picture Research Room (Room 5050) and the Cartographic Research Room (Room 3050). Digitized content already available in the National Archives Catalog will be unaffected. Access to any self-service reference materials in Room 4000; regular pulls of film, audio, and video reference copies from the Motion Picture holdings; and microfilm in the custody of the Motion Picture Branch will be suspended during these dates.

Reference consultation staff will be available on an on-call basis and will be able to provide limited service to onsite researchers. Textual records in the custody of the Motion Picture Branch (e.g., production files) which normally require pull slips will be made available in Room 3050, and pulled at the regular pull times. The on-call consultant will arrange for the pulling and refiling of these records for researcher use. The consultant will also make Room 4000 finding aids available by specific request.

Motion picture reproduction orders (Item Approval Request Lists, or IARLs) and the mopix@nara.gov inbox will be unaffected by the temporary closure.

We ask for your patience and understanding while we work through these physical changes to the room.

Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns to Daniel Rooney, Chief of the Motion Picture, Sound and Video Branch. He can be reached at 301-837-1995 or daniel.rooney@nara.gov.
