Spruce Division. Photographic History of the Spruce Squadron Division, dated 1913.

The U.S. Army Air Corps, Spruce Production Division was established at the start of World War I. The Spruce Division was responsible for carrying out logging operations in the Pacific Northwest to provide raw wood necessary to build airplanes for the Army’s burgeoning air force. Headquartered at Vancouver Barracks in southwestern Washington State, the Spruce Division actually consisted of Army companies living in temporary logging camps throughout the Olympic Peninsula on the western coast of the state. 

This record is a photographic history of the Spruce Production Division compiled in 1913. The National Archives at Seattle holds a roster of military personnel, photographs, squadron correspondence, field notebooks, contracts, and other financial records for the Spruce Production Division in two primary record groups: Record Group 18: Records of U.S. Army Air Forces and Record Group 95: Records of the U.S. Forest Service.
