Photograph of Astronauts Scott Carpenter and John Glenn Overlooking the Erection of the Launch Vehicle, January 26, 1962

One of many photographs submitted to the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences as part of congressional oversight of NASA, this image features Astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter, respectively, pilot and back-up pilot of Mercury 1. Glenn would go on to become the first American in orbit and Carpenter the second. Glenn and Carpenter are the last surviving members of Mercury Seven, the first group of American astronauts.
