S. 50, A Bill to provide for the admission of the State of Hawaii into the Union, March 11, 1959

The first bill for Hawaiian statehood was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 11, 1919 but died in committee shortly thereafter. Over forty years later, in March of 199, both houses of Congress passed S. 50, a bill granting statehood to Hawaii. Following a referendum vote by Hawaiians that summer Hawaii entered the Union as the 50th State on August 21, 1959 by proclamation from President Eisenhower.
