Vice President Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris, 49th Vice President of the United States (2021-2025), was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California, the first of two daughters born to Donald J. Harris and Shyamala Gopalan. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Howard University in 1986 and a Juris Doctor from University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1989. Harris served as a deputy district attorney from 1990 to 1998 in Oakland, California, and was elected to serve as the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. Harris served as Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017, and as United States Senator from California from 2017 until 2021. In the Senate, Harris served on the Budget; Environment and Public Works; and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committees; and on the Select Committee on Intelligence Affairs. Harris accepted Joseph R. Biden’s invitation in 2020 to join the Democratic presidential ticket as his selection for vice president. The Biden-Harris ticket won the presidential election on November 3, 2020. Harris resigned as Senator shortly before being sworn in as Vice President on January 20, 2021.
