National Security Files: Oversize Maps and Photographs, 1964?

This series consists of oversize materials collected by the office of the National Security Adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson. The series includes large maps of geographic regions of the globe, including the polar regions, North, Central, and South America, East Asia, the North Atlantic Ocean, and Canada; and aerial photographs of medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missile sites. National Security Files: Vietnam Country Files, 11/22/1963 - 1/20/1969

This series is the primary source for Lyndon B. Johnson administration diplomatic, military and intelligence materials related to the Vietnam War and to international relations with the Government of South Vietnam. It consists of White House memorandums; State Department and Defense Department telegrams, memorandums and reports; and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) intelligence reports. Some materials from the John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower administrations are included in these files as well as some materials dealing with the origins of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam conflict. The series includes correspondence, special studies and other diplomatic and military materials that were drafted by or sent to the staff of President Lyndon B. Johnson's special assistants for national security affairs. It also includes telegrams and reports exchanged between U.S. Ambassadors (Henry Cabot Lodge, Maxwell Taylor, Ellsworth Bunker) in Saigon and U.S. offices in Washington, DC, as well as diplomatic exchanges concerning Vietnam with nations that contributed to the defense of South Vietnam such as Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and South Korea. It also includes material concerning nations that neighbor Vietnam such as Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, insofar as they relate to the Vietnam War. Subjects covered in this series include U.S. military operations and economic assistance programs in South Vietnam; the air campaign against North Vietnam; Soviet and Chinese aid to North Vietnam; efforts to defeat the Viet Cong; South Vietnamese elections; Pacification; U.S. prisoners of war; international peace-seeking initiatives and bombing halts; efforts to build U.S. public support for the war; the anti-war movement in the U.S. and abroad; press coverage of the war; congressional attitudes towards the war; the August 1964 attacks in the Tonkin Gulf and the resulting Gulf of Tonkin Resolution; and the 1968 Tet Offensive and the siege of Khe Sanh (Huong Hoa). The finding aid for the series is available at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library. Papers of James U. Cross: Reports, Logs, and Office Files, ca. 1961 - ca. 1969

This series contains materials collected by Brigadier General James U. Cross during his service as military aide and pilot for Lyndon Baines Johnson during Johnson's years as Vice President and President. Most of the material pertains to the Johnson presidency and consists of White House trip reports and passenger lists, aircraft entry control logs, special mission files, 4th Army aviation detachment correspondence, memorandums, a daily reading file of the military aides, and photographs. The topics of the material reflect Cross' service as pilot of Air Force One and include travel, presidential aircraft, presidential trips, and the security of the President. The finding aid for the series is available at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library.

 

Papers of William F. Jackson: Desk Files, 1961 - 1963

This series consists of papers of William F. Jackson, military aide to then Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. The papers contain correspondence, reports, speeches, notes, and newspaper clippings about the Vice President’s schedule, trips, speaking engagements, military issues, and personnel issues, as well as materials on Colonel Jackson’s career, achievements, and professional activities. The series includes aerial photographs of President Johnson's ranch.
