Still Pictures Aerial Photography in Record Group 171: Records of the Office of Civilian Defense

 

Camouflage of Industrial and Other Sites in California, 1930 - 1943 (171-T)

Photographs, drawings, and other visual representation of camouflage protection plans and arrangements for industrial; military; and municipal sites in California. Included are site photographs (aerial obliques and verticals) and photographs of drawings of proposed schemes. There are negatives for only approximately 10% of the prints; a few negatives do not have matching prints. Prints were acquired from a variety of private sources and date 1930-1941. Correspondence dates from 1941-1943. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.

 

Camouflage Methods and Techniques, 1940 - 1945 (171-CMT)

Black and white lantern and 2"x2" slides mounted between glass of photographs and photographs of drawings and diagrams illustrating proper methods and techniques for urban and industrial camouflage; field camouflage for military personnel; and proper blackout procedures. Included are aerial scenes of cities; dams; refineries; factories; and rural areas; drawings of proper and improper camouflage; and examples of camouflage in nature. There are 2"x2" glass duplicates for approximately 25% of the images.

 

Camouflage Studies from the Pratt Institute, NY, ca. 1939 - ca. 1942 (171-PI)

This series consists of black and white slides of aerial photographs (vertical and oblique) of harbors, docks, factories, and refineries, some of which are identified as to location and height. Also included are charts on the physics and mechanics of explosions, drawings of camouflage designs for buildings and landscaping, and photos of camouflage models. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.

 

English Camouflage, 1939 - 1942 (171-EC)

Aerial oblique 'before and after' black and white photographs in print, negative, and slide format of camouflaged industrial and military sites in England, showing the uses of different methods and materials. Also included are photographs of the camouflaging of airstrips and airplanes, and a booklet on camouflage procedures published by the Camouflage Committee of the British government. Some of the images are only represented in two of the three media, prints and negatives but no slide, slide and negative but no print. The slides are either glass or film mounted between glass; the method by which the OCD acquired this series is unknown. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.
