Still Pictures Aerial Photography in Record Group 242: National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized

General Erwin Rommel's Campaigns in France, 5/1940 - 12/1941 (242-EAPC)

Photographs depicting military activities in these two campaigns. Included are many photographs of Rommel, other German leaders such as Generals Guderian, Dreuz, and Bottcher, Italian General Garibaldi, Lucie Rommel, and two shots of Rommel with Hitler. There are many shots of equipment and troops both arriving and in action, as well as numerous landscape and desert scenes. A minority of the photographs are dated and captioned in German, and these are separated from the uncaptioned material. These photographs were taken by various photographers, German and Italian, and copies were provided to General Rommel as a courtesy. Some are duplicates of items in 242-HB, where there are negatives for these. There were no original negatives filed with the prints. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room. This series is partially digitized.

Photographs from the Rehse Archiv, 1914 - 1936 (242-RH)

This series is composed of photographs from the F.J.M. Rehse Archiv fuer Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a Munich-based private archive whose holdings were confiscated, at least in part, by Allied authorities after World War II. These photographs constitute the only Rehse materials still in the custody of the National Archives, the remaining materials having been returned to Germany in 1968. Most of the photographs in this series were taken during the World War I from the German side; they depict numerous scenes from both the front lines and rear areas. German troops, especially troops from Bavaria, are mainly depicted in these pictures, although there are also pictures of prisoners-of-war and various important personalities, including the Kaiser and the King and Queen of Bavaria. A folder of aerial photographs demonstrates the state of that art during World War I. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.
