Photographic Album of Photographs of the Restoration of the Italian Monastery Monte Cassino, 1947 (260-MC)

This photographic album was acquired by the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFA and A), section of the Office of Military Government for Germany (OMGUS). The purpose of the MFA and A section was to make inspections of cultural buildings and objects for their preservation; to recommend future disposition of such objects; and to prevent any further deterioration or demolition of historical buildings. In order to accomplish this MFA and A organized collection points throughout Germany to house cultural objects pending final restitution. This album of photographs depicts the restoration process of the Italian monastery Monte Cassino. The images compare the condition of the monastery before and after the war showing the extent of the damage and the task in restoring the structure. There are aerial photographs of the monastery and images showing the rebuilding process including the interior and exterior of various structures. Images of particular interest show designs for the interior of the monastery. They include drawings for inlaid marble pavements, altars, steps leading to the altar, pillars, and wall decorations; architectural drawing of the entire monastery; and a view of a partially completed structure. There is one missing photograph.
