Still Pictures Aerial Photography in Record Group 326: Records of the Atomic Energy Commission

Photographs of the Aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Detonations, 1945 (326-HN)

These photographs, which apparently are copies of those released by the U.S. Army Air Force and the Strategic Bombing Survey, show the extent of the devastation wrought upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, after the atomic explosions of August 6 and 9, 1945. The photographs include aerial views of the aiming points for both targets, as well as general views of the devastated cities. There is also a view of the mushroom cloud formed after the Nagasaki attack (326-HN-2-6). For other photographs relating to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks, see RG 77, Series MDH and AEC. Also, see RG 243, Series H. For other photographs relating to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks, see RG 77, Series MDH and AEC. Also see RG 243, Series H.

Photographs of Damage to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ca. 1946 (326-AB)

These black and white lantern slides show the scenes of devastation which occurred after the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. The lantern slides themselves were probably produced in 1946, after the photographs had been declassified. Included are scenes of demolished buildings, aerial views of the cities, and injuries suffered by the inhabitants. Most of the lantern slides contain a brief caption. For other photographs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, see RG 77, Series MDH; RG 243, Series H, and related photographs in RG 434, Series OR.
