Photographic Prints of Buildings, Grounds, and People, 1870 - 1920 (418-G)

St. Elizabeth's Hospital (known until 1916 as Government Hospital for the Insane) opened in 1855 under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior. The Hospital served not only as a treatment center for the mentally ill, but also a research and training institute. The Photographic Department, which became the Public Information Office in the 1960's made and collected photographs for general entertainment and information purposes. The photographs depict interiors and exteriors of hospital buildings (the bulk of the collection); patients; staff members including Charles Nichols, first Superintendent in 1937; and Dorothea Dix. These Negatives, although similar in subject matter to series P, depict an earlier time period and do not (with a few exceptions) match those items in P. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room. This series is fully digitized.
