Still Pictures Aerial Photographs in Record Group 69: Records of the Work Projects Administration

WPA Airways and Airports Section, Airport Sites and Airport Constructions, ca. 1936 - ca. 1940 (69-AAC)

This series consists of original prints collected by the Airways and Airports Section from sources such as the Army Air Corps, private firms, WPA and other government agencies. Each state is divided into aerial photos of airports and airport sites, both oblique and vertical views; and mostly ground views of airport construction, as well as, in a few cases, miscellaneous other airport activities. Most of these do not have the corresponding 69-AAN number on them, but most of the aerial photos will have matching copy negatives which can be located fairly easily. Sizes of these prints vary. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.

WPA Airways and Airports Section, Copy Negative File of Aerial Views of Airports, ca. 1936 - ca. 1940 (69-AAN)

These are copy negatives of the prints showing aerial views from series 69-AAA, AAB, and AAC. All are numbered. There are negatives of the same photos, one from the original print, the others copied from prints that had data gathered in the field superimposed onto the original print, both original and revised information. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.

WPA Airways and Airports Section, Set of Aerial Views of Airports, ca. 1936 - ca. 1940 (69-AAB)

These 6"x9" copy photos were originally mounted in binders, arranged as they are now, by state and city. They include both vertical and oblique aerial views, both from the original and from the annotated photos. This group represents probably some final uniform set of photos for the airport survey made for the office of origin. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.

WPA Airways and Airports Section, Vertical Aerial Copy Photos of Airports, ca. 1936 - ca. 1940 (69-AAA)

These are 10"x12" copy prints of aerial vertical photos of airports. Those in boxes 1 to 6 are generally prints that include the superimposed, photographically added information obtained by WPA workers in the field. Some photos have the original written tracings. The photos in boxes 7 to 9 are those without additional information, just the original unannotated prints. The finding aid for the series is available in the Still Pictures Research Room.
